We’d like to thank all of our loyal followers on Facebook & Twitter, but Viva Vegas Pets is taking a sabbatical from posting.
In a way to better support our rescues and shelters we’re going to be devoting more of our time to our non-profit, Seniors To The Rescue. We work with older adults in assisted living communities and complete projects that support animal rescues and shelters.
Our current two projects are Boo-Boo Bag, first aid kits, which are given to rescues and shelters to sell and raise donations. The second is Snuggle Beddies, pet fleece blankets. These are given to shelters to comfort their furry-friends as they are waiting for their forever homes.
If you’d like to support these wonderful programs and the seniors in our community, please visit our website or click here to see how you can help. We’re also looking to help more rescues and shelters in town. If you know someone we can help or we can help you, please contact us.
Please share this post to spread the word about Seniors To The Rescue and help local rescues and shelters.
Thank you,
The Viva Vegas Pets Staff

A Las Vegas Fire & Water Damage Restoration company, Westside Restoration, has donated Pet Rescue window decals to Las Vegas and Henderson Animal shelters in effort to bring awareness to emergency disasters and pet safety.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Apr. 1, 2014 – LAS VEGAS — The subject of Pet Safety has received ample media attention recently, in light of the “arson puppies” that were rescued from a set fire at a Las Vegas pet store in January 2014 and are currently being held / adopted-out at the Animal Foundation.
Westside Restoration’s Pet Rescue decals were donated to the shelters, anticipating that new adoptive pet owners would each receive a sticker, take it home and display it in their window. The eye-catching sticker was designed to be adhered to a residential window visible to the outside, thus alerting fireman and/ or rescue workers to pets living inside the home needing rescuing too, in the event of a fire, flood, or any other emergency disaster.
Being pet owners, employees of Westside Restoration value their furry companion’s safety and wish for all pet owners beloved animals to be safely rescued in the event of an emergency. “The first step is awareness” says Melinda from WSR Accounting. “If a rescue worker doesn’t know there are pets in a house, how would they know to rescue them?” “The sticker actually protects the animals by alerting the rescue workers. It shows right there on it– how many dogs and cats you have.” Furthermore, Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine listed a Pet Rescue sticker as a “Practical Planning Tip that can be started immediately to give you assurance and security that your pet will be taken care of in your absence.”
Pets are considered family in many households, and Westside Restoration would like to help keep them unharmed by bringing awareness to pet safety during emergencies—and a Pet Rescue sticker is a good start.
Westside Restoration is an emergency disaster Cleanup, Repair and Restoration Company serving Las Vegas Nevada and Phoenix Arizona. They specialize in Fire, Smoke, Water and Flood damage. They also do mold inspections and mold remediation.

Save-The-Date for Bark in the Park on March 8th at Cornerstone Park – 1600 Wigwam Pky, Henderson, NV
LAS VEGAS — VIP lounges and entrance fees are common place in Las Vegas, but now there is a social club downtown just for pampered pets and their owners.
The view from the outside is what most of us are likely to see. You need a special key card to get inside the Hydrant Club private park.
Members pay a monthly fee that many people would find expensive considering nearly all other dog parks are free to the public but these dog lovers say it is worth every penny.
A field of grass feels good on the paws and some trees provide shade. However, it comes at a price. Membership fees can vary from around $40 to more than $200 a month.
“That is to know that I can bring my dog somewhere where the other dogs are safe. They’ve been vaccinated. They’ve been screened. My dogs not going to get attacked,” Hydrant Club member Raeanne Gallagher said.
The Hydrant Club offers customized packages based on a pup’s need. Memberships can be all-access seven-days-a-week, or just the weekends or weekdays.
There are also doggie daycare and training options. To play, pooches can’t just pay. This club requires an entrance exam.
The owner, Cathy Brooks, checks to make sure each animal is up to date on shots and pays special attention to behavior.
Aggressive or overly dominant dogs need to get training or go elsewhere.
“We want dogs that kind of have a loose body posture because that indicates just like in humans that they are relaxed,” Brooks said.
The dog owners say downtown Las Vegas needed the Hydrant Club.
“It is something I really wished for moving down here, and influenced my decision to move down here,” downtown resident Alex Hamlin said.
Club members say it is not just for the pets but for the community. They say it is a place where humans can socialize outside of coffee shops or bars.
“In just the last week and a half the dog park has been open, I know ten more people that I would’ve never met before in a healthy environment,” Gallagher said.
The owner, or chief human officer, at the Hydrant Club has been a dog trainer for years, but she had a chance meeting with Zappos CEO and downtown supporter Tony Hsieh while working in the tech industry.
He called her to partner with his Downtown Project to create the park, which opened last Saturday.

The Animal Foundation offering $10 adoption fees on all animals waiting for homes 10 days or longer, August 25-30, in hopes of winning $100,000 national grant.
Las Vegas, Nev. – August 23, 2013 – The Animal Foundation, Nevada’s largest open-admission animal shelter and pet adoption center, announced that it is reducing adoption fees to $10 for all adoptable animals that have been waiting 10 days or longer to find a home beginning August 25 through August 30.
Shelter staff hopes that the deeply discounted fees will motivate residents to give a homeless pet a loving home while assisting the organization in its efforts to win a $100,000 grant from the ASPCA. Since July 1, The Animal Foundation has been participating in the ASPCA $100K Challenge, a 3-month-long competition in which 50 shelters from across the country strive to save the lives of more animals than they did in the same three months of 2012. The shelter with the greatest increase in lives saved over 2012 receives a $100,000 grant. The Animal Foundation is currently in second place nationally, just 62 adoptions behind Riverside County Department of Animal Services. The Challenge ends Saturday, August 31.
“This June and July, we saved 2,749 lives…504 more than the same two months of 2012,” says Meghan Scheibe, marketing and public relations manager for The Animal Foundation. “We are grateful to the community for supporting our efforts by adopting and getting involved this summer. So many animals have been adopted to wonderful homes, transferred to our amazing rescue organization partners, and reunited with their owners. We’re just a few positive placements shy of winning a $100,000 grant that could help us increase the lives we’re able to save in 2014 and beyond. We need members of the community to adopt this week to help us finish in first Continue reading LOCAL ANIMAL SHELTER IN RUNNING TO WIN $100,000; OFFERING $10 ADOPTIONS

The belief that dogs are colorblind, in the sense that they see the world only in black and white and shades of gray, is a common misconception. In a series of painstaking and extended measurements Jay Neitz at the University of California, Santa Barbara, established that dogs do have color vision (see here). However the range of colors that dogs see is much more limited than the range of colors that we humans see. This is because human beings have three different types of color receptors (the cones in the retina) each of which is tuned to a different range of wavelengths, while dogs have only two types of color receptors (and many fewer of these proportionally). This means that dogs can still see colors, but their visual world is reduced to yellows, blues, and shades of gray. Furthermore the reduced number of cones in the canine retina may indicate that the colors that dogs see are not as intense. In the figure below you can compare what a human being might see to what a dog might see. Read the complete article here.

Las Vegas tech company supports Nevada’s largest animal shelter in its quest to win national grant by saving lives this summer.
Las Vegas, Nevada (PRWEB) July 17, 2013
Duvon Corporation announced today that it has teamed up with The Animal Foundation, Nevada’s largest open-admission animal shelter and pet adoption agency, to help reunite lost pets with their owners. The technology company is offering pet owners a valuable tool for identifying their pets, along with the opportunity to donate to the shelter through Duvon’s crowdfunding campaign.
“All of us at Duvon are animal lovers, and have been looking for a way to give back to the animal welfare community,” explains Duvon’s President and Chief Creative Officer, Ben Ow. “We realized that one of our campaign ‘perks’, a QR code dog tag, would be a huge benefit to pet owners and a smart way to use technology to identify lost pets. We became aware of The Animal Foundation’s goal to save more lives this summer and win a $100,000 grant from the ASPCA, and we wanted to help.”
Reuniting lost pets with their owners is an important part of The Animal Foundation’s work in the Las Vegas community. The non-profit is currently competing with 48 other animal welfare organizations across the country for a $100,000 grant from the ASPCA. The participating shelter with the greatest increase in lives saved through adoptions, placing animals with rescue organizations and reuniting pets with their owners during the summer months will receive grant funding from the ASPCA to develop and implement new programs that will help save more lives. We had to move quickly and we were unable to bring our dogs and cats with us. They are still at our old house (in the process of being sold), but we are running out of time to find them homes.
2 Alaskan Malamute females, sisters, 11 years old. These girls are big, around 130 pounds and will need room to run and play.
1 Chesapeake Bay retriever male, 9 years old. Not quite as big as the girls, but will need room to run and play.
The dogs each have an outdoor igloo that will go with them.
2 cats, around 6 years old, female, indoors. One all black, one tortoise shell. Litter box trained, NOT declawed. Litter boxes with covers that will go with them.
All have been fixed.
At this point, we have to assume that they are not going to be kept together. We just need to find them good homes and quickly.
You can email me directly at [email protected] if you’d like more information or pictures.
Thanks for any help in findings these gals and guy new homes.

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) — It is heartbreaking when a pet has to be put down and many times they are older animals that no one wants to adopt.
Mary Sanders decided that was unacceptable.
Sanders is the president of the Senior Spaniel Rescue in Las Vegas. The group was started seven years ago when Sanders and other animal lovers started to see a pattern.
They noticed that older animals were being dropped off because they often required more care or their owners simply became bored with them.
However, many of the dogs they saw had years of life left in them.
So, they started the group to help those dogs.
Members now foster the dogs until new homes can be found.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
From Lark Williams
Hi, This is Lark Williams. My new show, “Las Vegas Homes with Lark Williams” want to help C.A.T.S., Inc. spread the word about the wonderful work they are doing. Anyone who knows me, knows I am such an animal advocate and support people that support the forgotten homeless – our four legged fur bodied angels.
I would like to do a segment on my new TV show featuring Henry and his wife and the work they do to provide food to people who can no longer afford to feed their pets. So rather than abandon them, leave them for adoption (right, like that’s going to happen) – they give people the opportunity to keep their pets and keep them fed during such a difficult time and transition.
I embrace their spirit and people that help make it possible.
Here’s what I can do: I can spread the word through my TV show. We can feature the organization and its mission and generate more support for this wonderful cause. I only need to cover costs to make this happen. Simply, we are looking for sponsorships to cover the cost to produce this segment. Any major donation will be recognized as sponsor/ donor for this segment with great appreciation.
Henry said that he seldom asks for money, but he has never had this opportunity to reach so many before. So, I’m asking for him. I can’t afford to do it all myself or I would in a minute.
Together, we can make this happen. Please donate to C.A.T.S., Inc. now.
I want to feed a cat or dog on the show this week…

Join $3 Thursday and $5 Friday |
We challenge you to donate $3 on Thursday and/ or $5 on Friday and encourage others to do the same. Just imagine for the price of a cup of coffee or a lunch plate, you could help save a dog’s life!
When you get 5 friends and they get 5 friends and so on, we could really make things happen.
SNBRF is back in the RED!! (Yikes!!))
With all of our dogs recently needing major medical, we have depleted all of our funds and are now in the negative.
We also still have dogs going to surgery this week.
We are happy to help these dogs but cannot continue to do so without funds and your generous aid in our efforts!
Remember all donations are TAX DEDUCTIBLE!
After Tomorrow, Thursday July 11, we will not be accepting any more dogs into the rescue. Unfortunately there is a need but we are limited to help without the money to care for these dogs. Almost every single dog that comes in needs medical care. If we are lucky, they only need vaccines. Lately every single dog that has come in has needed much more than vaccines, most needing a surgery.
We have been very fortunate to have the continued donations from our supporters, but right now the need outweighed the support.
We do everything we can to help but sometimes we too hit a wall and just cannot help any more. We are so far in the red, that we actually cannot help another dog until we get out of the red and back into a positive account.
So please challenge yourself to participate in $3 Thursday and $5 Friday and encourage your friends and family as well.

Take the FREE Pledge and help bring pet health to shelters.
Pledges received through June 30 trigger kit donations worth up to $250,000 with the help of American Humane Association
OMAHA, Neb., May 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Sergeant’s Pet Care Products, a leading pet care product company, with the help of American Humane Association, is distributing Pet Health Kits worth up to $250,000 to shelters nationwide as part of its emBARK on Pet Health program.
The emBARK on Pet Health campaign asks pet owners to take a free pledge to become more mindful of their pet’s ongoing needs at www.embarkonpethealth.com. Each pledge triggers the donation of a Sergeant’s Pet Health Kit, which will help one of the millions of animals waiting for their forever homes at local shelters nationwide.
Sergeant’s Pet Care Products is committed to donating up to 5,000 kits, which will ensure these animals are sent home with all the products they need to get started on a healthy and happy life after adoption. With nearly 4,500 pledges taken to date, there is still time for consumers to visit the site and take their pledge so even more kits can be delivered to community shelters.
“There are millions of animals looking to be adopted in shelters nationwide at any given time,” said Patsy Sumner, vice president of marketing services. “We hope the Sergeant’s Pet Health Kits will give families an additional incentive for considering adoption this summer, knowing they will not only leave with a new lovable family member, but also with all the tools they need for a healthy start together.”

Love photography? Love shelter pets? Join One Picture Saves a Life and The Animal Foundation for the One Picture Saves a Life Las Vegas Workshop.
8 million dirty, scared, and disorientated pets enter shelters each year – and the photos taken are what people see when looking to adopt. One Picture Saves a Life’s mission is to provide shelter staff and volunteers with the resources to successfully groom and photograph shelter pets, helping give them the second chance they deserve.
The public workshop will be a presentation by Seth Casteel covering some tips and tricks for taking better photographs of shelter pets, and will include a Q&A session and an Underwater Dogs book signing. We will help pair you with local shelters who need volunteers so you can put what you learned into action!
There’s a limited amount of space, so it’s first-come, first-served – sign up now! Apply, and One Picture Saves will email you closer to the event to give you more details.
Submit your application in the “Public Workshop” tab at http://www.onepicturesaves.com/get-involved/

But what if you can’t adopt? Here are some easy ways you can still help:
- Donate your Facebook status. Just paste this message into the “What’s on your mind?” box at the top of your page: “June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month. Save a life: Adopt a cat! http://www.petfinder.com”
- Tweet, retweet and repeat the following (or your own brilliant message): “June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month. Save a life: Adopt a cat! http://www.petfinder.com”
- Contact your local shelter or rescue group (you can search for groups near you here) and ask if they have a donation wish list or other flyer they’d like to you to post around your office or neighborhood. They may be holding special events for Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month which you can help promote.
- Share an adoptable cat or a Petfinder cat-adoption Happy Tail on your blog, Facebook or Twitter page each day of the month.
- Sign up as a foster parent or shelter volunteer then tell your friends how great it is. Contact your local shelter or rescue group, or register in our volunteer database.
- Add a Petfinder widget or banner to your Web site or blog.
- Write an op-ed about the importance of pet adoption for your local paper.
- Contact your local shelter or rescue group and offer to photograph their adoptable pets and upload the pics to Petfinder.
- Donate to your local shelter or rescue group or to the Petfinder.com Foundation in honor of Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month.
- Pass on an understanding of the importance of pet adoption to the next generation. Talk to your kids, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and other up-and-comers about animal shelters and why Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat Month, and pet adoption in general, is important.

“Our mission may have started with helping feral and stray cats over the years, but now it has evolved to something bigger. After many generous donations of dog food we have begun distributing dog food to families who have fallen on hard times and can no longer afford to feed their dogs”.
